PROFESSIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Each professional learning experience is customized to your audience, community, and local natural environment.

In a collaborative process, we develop and facilitate place-based culturally relevant STEM-GreenSTEM professional learning (PL) experiences for educators that integrate effective STEM instructional strategies, Next Generation Science Standards, and local environment and sustainability issues.

Here are a few topic ideas:

  • Making STEM relevant and purposeful to the learners' culture, identity, and interests

  • Creating a GreenSTEM project using the GreenSTEM approach and backward design

  • Putting green into STEM

  • Decolonizing curriculum and programs

  • Bringing Indigenous Ways of Knowing into your curriculum and programs

  • Starting local, going global, integrating UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • Empowering learners with problem- and project-based STEM action projects

INFORMAL EDUCATION: Professional learning, curriculum & program development

Organizations and agencies are in a unique position of providing purposeful, engaging, and relevant STEM experiences for students, parents, teachers, community members, and decision-makers. Your setting is already engaging. Take guests to a new level with problem-based experiences that give them agency to understand and design solutions that support your mission.

Zoos, aquariums, museums can connect global to local. You create site-specific engaging educational opportunities that spark fascination, awe, and passion for the natural world and people around the world. Explore ways to connect a global focus with local ecosystems, species, and issues that inspire and empower your guests to be active, engaged and informed community citizens with a global perspective.  (Start Global. Go Local.)

Nature centers and parks start local and can go global. You create unique place-based educational opportunities that immerse visitors in your local natural space and introduce them to local wildlife and ecosystems. Explore ways to integrate local problem-solving activities and to make intriguing regional and global connections. (Start Local. Go Global.)

STEM WITHOUT BORDERS™

STEM Without Borders™ (SWB) offers students the opportunity to use their STEM knowledge and practices to design sustainable solutions to international environmental problems through global collaborative partnerships.

SWB fosters collaboration between K-12 students (i.e., school, class or club) and site experts (i.e., scientist, organization, agency, community group, school) who live or work at the site of the problem and are trying to solve it. The site experts, who ultimately implement and monitor the solution, benefit from the students’ contribution of human, material, financial, and innovative resources to help solve the problem.

Students and educators benefit by applying their STEM knowledge and science/engineering practices to real-world problems. They experience the altruistic and tangible impacts of their actions on the natural world and the culturally-diverse people affected by the problem and begin identifying themselves as global collaborators, problem solvers, and leaders. The other benefactors of this partnership between students and site experts are the recipients of the STEM solution—the local people and environment.
